TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Mississippi State men's golf team posted the best round of any team in third and final round of the Seminole Intercollegiate with a 1-under-par 283 and improved two spots to finish sixth among the 14-team field. The 283 was the lowest by the Bulldogs in the three-round tournament and was the lowest round posted by MSU this spring.
It was the second-straight sixth-place finish by MSU and its third round showing was five strokes better than any other team in the field as the Bulldogs three-round total was brought to 876. State, spent majority of the tournament inside the top five and just missed a top five finish by one-stroke, as fifth-place Vanderbilt finished with a 23-over-par 875. Host-school Florida State won the event with a 13-over-par 865.
"It was a great effort for the team today," said seventh-year head coach Clay Homan. "There was consistency through the lineup and this was probably the best round we have played this year. To be the low score in the field by five shots today is a great accomplishment for this young team."
Bulldog true freshman Robi Calvesbert led the Maroon and White for the fourth-straight tournament as he finished at 4-over-par with a 217 and a 15th-place finish among the 75-player individual field. Calvesbert also paced MSU in the third-round with a 1-under-par effort. The 70 in the third round was a career-low third-round score for Calvesbert, and was the third-best round shot by any player in the field.
Sophomore Lee Heaton of MState shot par for the second time in the tournament and finished the 54-hole event one-stroke behind Calvesbert for a tie for 16th among the individual field. Heaton tied Calvesbert for the team-lead in birdies made in the final round of play with four.
State's true freshman Mike Genovese was an impressive 2-under-par following his front nine performance today and eventually finished with a even-par showing of 71, bringing his three-round total to 223 and a 32nd-place finish. Fellow freshman Brad Mason matched Genovese's third round total of 71 and finished with an 11-over-par 224. Sophomore Brad Thompson rounded out the Bulldogs lineup with a 54-hole total of 235.
"This team is beginning to move in the right direction and we look to continue this momentum in the weeks to come," said Homan. "Robi (Calvesbert) and Lee (Heaton) continued their strong play and the other three players were solid contributors as well."
The Bulldogs will face a quick turnaround as they tee off next weekend at the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C.
