Blair Hiller shared match honors with Newsome, registering 13 kills on a .423 hitting performance. Teammate Lauren Rapp also reached double digits with 10 kills.
Newsome got the Bulldogs off to a fast start with a kill and back-to-back blocks en route to a 4-1 State lead in the opening set. Three consecutive kills by Newsome stacked State to an 18-13 edge. But Blair Hiller came off the bench to spark a Kentucky run, registering six of her set-leading seven kills during a 12-2 surge that lifted UK to a 25-20 opening set win.
State, after hitting .116 in the opening stanza, warmed up offensively, hitting at a match-best .263 in the second set. Newsome and Kellye Jordan tallied five kills each for State as the Bulldogs battled UK to a 22-22 deadlock. But a Bulldog service error pushed UK back in front and the Wildcats sealed the 25-22 second set win on kills by Hiller and Becky Pavan.
The Bulldogs jumped out to 4-2 and 6-4 leads early in the third set before the Wildcats took control with a 6-0 run. After pulling even at 6-6 UK out-scored State 10-2 and with a .393 attack percentage, recorded a match-clinching 25-13 win.
Junior Kellye Jordan registered eight kills and eight digs for State while freshman setter Parris Perret just missed her fifth double-double, backing her 30 assists with nine digs.
Kentucky finished with a 46-34 edge in kills and a 7-4 advantage at the net in team blocks.
