STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Mississippi State soccer team was unable to convert on a number of scoring chances Tuesday night as it dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Alabama at the MSU Soccer Field.
The loss drops MSU to 8-2 overall, 0-2 in SEC play. Alabama's victory in its league opener improved the Crimson Tide to 5-3 on the season.
The Bulldogs out-shot UA 21-10, including a 9-5 advantage in on-goal opportunities. Freshman Rachel Wannek fired four times in the match while sophomore Lauren Morgan and junior Kat Walsh each attempted three shots.
"I'm truly disappointed with the way we played tonight," MSU head coach Neil Macdonald said. "We are a better team than what we showed tonight, and I thought we threw away three points in the SEC standings."
State fired 10 shots in the opening half and put four attempts on goal, but Alabama's Kelly King struck with the game-winner on a deflected ball just 25 seconds before halftime.
Senior goalkeeper Taryn Holland stopped three shots in the match in relief of Skylar Rosson, who turned back the one attempt she faced.
Justine Bernier made nine saves in the match for Alabama.
State closes out a four-match homestand this weekend, hosting Florida at 7 p.m. Friday and South Carolina at 1 p.m. Sunday.
