STARKVILLE, Miss. - Freshman Jasmine Simmons netted her first career goal, but the Mississippi State soccer team had its school-record eight-game win streak halted Friday night with a 5-1 loss to Auburn on a muddy MSU Soccer Field.
The loss drops State to 8-1 on the year and 0-1 in SEC play. Auburn improves to 4-2-3 overall, 1-0 in league play.
The Tigers out-shot MSU 23-12, including a 13-4 difference in on-goal opportunities.
"We got beat by a better team tonight," MSU head coach Neil Macdonald said. "Auburn is a very good team who does a nice job of possessing the ball. We have reminded this young team that SEC play is coming and we have areas of our game that we have to improve. Hopefully we can learn from this loss and come back strong on Sunday."
State fell behind 2-0 in the opening half on goals from Stephanie Fransoso and Katy Frierson, but Simmons put the Dawgs on the board in the 32nd minute as Kat Walsh found her at the top of the box for a 20-yard shot that deflected off AU goalkeeper Amy Howard's hands into the right side of the net.
Walsh collected at least one point for the fourth-straight match, moving her into fourth on the school's consecutive-points list.
AU extended the lead to 3-1 in the 55th minute as Julie King took a loose ball off a corner kick and slid it past MSU goalie Taryn Holland.
Holland made five saves in the match before giving way to redshirt freshman Skylar Rosson. Rosson hauled in the only shot she faced in 22 minutes.
The Tigers added a Rebecca Howell goal in the 64th minute and a Chelsea Yauch 67th-minute score to cap the match.
The Bulldogs return to action Sunday, hosting Alabama in an SEC Western Division showdown. Kick-off for that match is set for 1 p.m., and fans are being asked to bring cans of food as part of the SEC's Together We CAN Food Drive. Admission to all MSU home matches is free.
