Bulldogs Conclude Play At NCAA Regionals
May 16, 2009 | Men's Golf
AUSTIN, Texas. ? After an interruption due to hazardous weather conditions, the Mississippi State men's golf team concluded play, and their season, at the NCAA Southwest Regional. The Bulldogs shot a team score of 901 to finish in 10th place at the par-71 University Golf Club in Austin, Texas. The 10th place finish is the second best finish by a Bulldog team at the NCAA Regionals.
"We came up short this week, but our guys played hard," said Head Coach Clay Homan. "Our guys have accomplished an awful lot during their four years at MSU. They have nothing to be ashamed about."
The Bulldogs were led by seniors Carlos Sainz, Jr. and Josh Bevell. This is the eighth time this season in which Sainz has led the team in scoring. Sainz posted the team's lowest round of the tournament with a 1-under-par 70 in round three to contribute to his 224 overall score and 28th place finish. MState's 36-hole leader Josh Bevell notched a 78 in round three to finish the competition with a 224. Senior Matt Fast improved from his opening round 79, to post scores of 72 and 75 in rounds two and three to finish in a tie for 37th place with a 226. Fast led the team with seven birdies. Noah Goldman improved on his second round score by seven strokes to finish the tournament with a 234 in a tie for 60th. Senior Brian Mason finished one stroke behind Goldman through the 54-hole event.
MSU closes the book on an impressive 2009 season with their second post season appearance in the Clay Homan-era, their first back-to-back top-10 finish in the SEC since 1999-2000, and two tournament championships (Troy Invitational and Mobile Bay Intercollegiate).
The Bulldog individuals also found success this season when Noah Goldman was able to capture his fourth individual tournament title at the Troy Invitational. Seniors Carlos Sainz, Jr. and Noah Goldman were able to finish their career up with the third (73.59) and sixth (73.84) best career scoring averages in Mississippi State history. Also, Sainz has now completed an MSU record 138 rounds of golf.
MState loses six seniors, Josh Bevell, Matt Fast, Noah Goldman, Brian Mason, Carlos Sainz, Jr. and Logan Young. These six seniors have combined for 590 rounds of golf for the Maroon and White over their respective careers. The Bulldogs will return three golfers with tournament play experience for the 2009-10 season.
