
Lady Bulldogs Put Away South Carolina With Second-Half Surge, 58-41

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State recorded its 20th victory of the women's basketball regular season Thursday night, knocking off South Carolina 58-41 in a Southeastern Conference contest played at the Humphrey Coliseum.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 20-8 overall and 7-6 in conference play, while the Lady Gamecocks fell to 10-16 and 2-11. MSU is presently sixth in the overall conference standings. The Lady Bulldogs could finish as high as fifth or as low as seventh based on the results of Sunday's play.
MSU has now won 20 or more games three times in school history. This year's squad becomes the first 20-win team since the 2002-03 squad won 24 games.
Both teams struggled offensively in the opening half. The Lady Bulldogs shot 30 percent in the opening half and managed only one field goal in the final 6:50 of the half.
Neither team could gain any type of separation, as the hosts led 20-19 at halftime.
The second half also started slowly. The teams were tied 22-22 before MSU finally opened up some breathing room with a 22-10 run. That run was sparked by a 3-point from Diamber Johnson.
MSU kept the defensive pressure up over the final 20 minutes, eventually forcing USC into 23 turnovers. Offensively, things improved sharply, with the Lady Bulldogs converting 50 percent of their shots in the game's final half.
After building the double digit lead midway through the second half, MSU put the contest away with a 9-0 run stretching over four of the final six minutes of regulation time.
For the contest, the Lady Bulldogs hit 25 of 62 shots from the field (40.9 percent), 3 of 18 shots from 3-point range (16.8 percent) and 5 of 9 shots from the foul line (55.6 percent). The Lady Gamecocks hit 17 of 47 shots from the field (36.4 percent), 2 of 13 shots from 3-point range (15.5 percent) and 5 of 12 shots from the foul line (41.4 percent).
The teams were even at 37 in rebounding. The Lady Bulldogs had 13 assists and 12 turnovers, while the Lady Gamecocks had five assists and 23 turnovers.
Chanel Mokango led MSU with 13 points and three blocks, while Alexis Rack added 11 points. Mary Kathryn Govero added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. USC's Lakeshia Sutton led all scorers with 14 points, while Tonia Williams added 10 points.
