Lady Bulldogs Complete First Round Of Spring Action
February 22, 2009 | Women's Golf
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - In the first round of spring play for Mississippi State's Lady Golfers, the squad stands tied for twelfth out of an NCAA-record 43 competing teams at the Kiawah Island Women's Intercollegiate.
Pacing the Lady Bulldogs in the fall with a 76.00 stroke average, sophomore Mallory Batson again led State with a 76 and placed tied for 26th overall individually.
Just one stroke behind Batson was junior Gina Sharp at five-over-par, who finished tied for 35th individually. Fellow junior Leigh Phillips and sophomore Erika Thornton both fired a 79 while freshman Perry Katherine Furr rounded out State golfers with an 89.
"The windy conditions made the golf course much more difficult today that yesterday's practice round," MSU coach Christi Sanders said. "As a team, we had too many high scores on some of the holes but we put ourselves in a respectable position going into tomorrow's round. We will play Oak Point Golf Course tomorrow without a practice round, so we will have to be very focused off the tees and rely solely on yardage books. "
All four participating Southeastern Conference squads placed within the round's top 15 performances. Leading after round one are Miami and East Tennessee State, which both finished 12-over-par at 300. Oral Roberts stands three strokes back in third with a 303 while Ole Miss ranks fourth at 305. Rounding out the tournament's first-round top-five were Western Carolina and UCF, both finishing 18-over-par. Individually, UCF's Stephanie Connelly leads the tournament at two-under-par and holds a two-stroke lead on second place.
Mississippi State's women golfers will begin second-round action beginning at 8:00 a.m. CT on Monday, while the third and final round will be held on Monday at 7:45 a.m. CT.
