
Mississippi State Registers 6-1 Win Over Georgia State In Men's Tennis

STARKVILLE, Miss. ? The Mississippi State men's tennis team finished off their weekend play with a 6-1 win over Georgia State, improving to 3-0 at home this season and 4-2 on the year. With the loss, Georgia State fell to 0-10 on the 2009 campaign.
“The team is listening to what I am telling them to improve on and taking it into each match with them and it is showing in our play, because we are finishing sets quicker with each match,” said Head Coach Per Nilsson. “I am also pleased with our crowds this early in the season and they are really playing a factor in how we play throughout the match.”
For the third straight match, the Bulldogs swept the doubles point, with senior Ryan Farlow and freshman Daniel Sanchez leading the way with an 8-1 showing over Jackson Moore and Trenton Spinks of Georgia State at No. 2. Clinching the point was the Bulldog freshmen tandem of Louis Cant and Artem Ilyushin, who soundly defeated Panthers William Adeimy and Lucas Thomaz, 8-1, at No. 3. Completing the sweep was the MSU duo of Chris Doerr and Tanner Stump, who took theie match 8-2 over Orlando Battaglia and Nejc Podkrajsek of GSU at the top position.
MState used that momentum to go on and win four-straight singles matches, with the rookie Cant capturing the first one, 6-2, 6-1, over the Panthers' Moore at the No. 4 position. Stump won his second match of the weekend, defeating GSU's Spinks, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6. The newcomer Sanchez then clinched the match for the Bulldogs, taking a two-set bout over Martin Shishkov of Georgia State, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2.
The youngster, Ilyushin won his match at the No. 3 spot, 6-1, 6-1, over Panther Henri Mangin. Georgia State got on the board at the No. 5 position when Thomaz of Georgia State won in a dramatic three-set battle, that ended in a super tiebreaker with the junior Doerr, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(7). State's senior Farlow, then completed a three-set comeback victory over the 119th ranked Podkrajsek at the No. 1 position, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(8).
State now turns its attention to the opening of the Southeastern Conference schedule on March 6 and 8, when MSU will play host to the fourth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers on Friday, March 6 at 2 p.m. and the second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs on Sunday, March 8 at 1 p.m.
