STARKVILLE, Miss. – Rachel Wannek's goal in the 71st minute and another stellar defensive outing lifted the Mississippi State soccer team to a 1-1 tie with No. 8 South Carolina on a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
The Bulldogs played to a 1-1 tie for the second-straight match after battling No. 7 Florida the full 110 minutes on Friday. The pair of ties gives MSU (8-2-2, 0-2-2 SEC) consecutive points against top-10 teams for the first time in school history.
The Gamecocks, who had their 11-match win streak snapped, out-shot the Bulldogs 14-12 on the muddy playing surface, but State put six of its shots on goal compared to USC's three.
After both teams battled to a stalemate in the opening half, the Gamecocks took a 1-0 lead 50 seconds into the second stanza. Brooke Jacobs slipped past the MSU defense and netted a pass from Kayla Grimsley from five yards out.
“I thought it was a very evenly-played match with both teams having to battle the conditions,” MSU head coach Neil Macdonald said. “We battled the entire match, and when we gave up the goal, I felt we stepped up, dominated the next 20 minutes and were very deserving of getting the equalizer.”
Wannek's tying goal, her fourth of the season, came in the 71st minute. The Bulldogs drew a foul just beyond the box, and the Woodstock, Ontario, native lined the free kick past a diving Mollie Patton into the left side of the net.
Bulldog senior goalkeeper Taryn Holland made two saves in the match, including denying the Gamecocks on a late breakaway opportunity.
MSU just missed on a chance to take the lead late in the second half. Junior Ashley Hood sent a perfectly-placed cross into the net area, but the Bulldogs were unable to get a foot on the ball with the wet conditions.
State opens a five-match road trip next weekend, traveling to Tennessee on Friday and Georgia on Sunday. Sunday's match in Athens will be televised by Comcast Sports South at 1 p.m. CDT.
