LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Mississippi State women's golf team fired an impressive third-round total of 301 today on the shoulders of junior Erika Thornton's 1-under-par performance to post a 12-stroke improvement from Monday's first round in the Prices Give Em Five Invitational.
Tying Thornton's three-round total of 232 and 16-over-par was senior Gina Sharp, who was tied for 55th overall.
Placing third on the team was sophomore Perry Katherine Furr, who saw her first action of the season and responded with a second-round career-low total of 73 en route to a three-round total of 233, eight shots better than her previous best performance. Furr also notched a new career best by tying for 61st individually.
Junior Mallory Batson finished with a 240 and 24-over-par while freshman Morgan McQuary fired a 252. Senior Leigh Phillips finished tied for 50th with a total of 230 after competing as an individual.
After overtaking last year's champion UC-Irvine in round two, Idaho stretched its lead to seven strokes to take team honors with a three-round total of 871 and 7-over-par. San Diego State concluded a tight battle for third place with Fresno State with a tremendous third-round total of 285 to finish 16-over-par. Baylor and Fresno State tied for fourth with team totals of 894. San Diego State's Christine Wong put away two challengers in the final round to claim individual honors with a tournament total of 206 and 10-under-par.
