LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Mississippi State's women's golf team concluded play in round one today ranked 18th at the Prices Give Em Five Invitational. The team total stands at 327, while junior Leigh Phillips is currently placed tied for 53rd overall after having competed as an individual.
Senior Gina Sharp leads the Lady Bulldogs in round one of the tournament with a score of 80 and is tied for 67th individually. Juniors Erika Thornton and Mallory Batson each fired an 82 and are tied for 79th while sophomore Perry Katherine Furr and freshman Morgan McQuary each recorded a total of 83 in round one.
After capturing last year's tournament title, UC-Irvine carries that momentum into this year's first round, leading the field by two strokes at 294. Holding second is Idaho with a team total of 296, and Fresno State stands third with a 298. Oregon State and Baylor are currently tied for fifth place, each with a team total of 303. Individually, UC-Irvine's Joy Trotter, San Diego State's Christine Wong and Baylor's Hannah Burke are tied for individual honors, each with a first-round score of 69.
Mississippi State's women golfers will begin the second round of competition at 9:30 Monday morning.
