ATHENS, Ga. - Mississippi State's soccer team led No. 13 Georgia for 73 minutes, but the upset bid fell short as the No. 13 Bulldogs scored a pair of late goals to rally for a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon at the UGA Soccer Stadium in Athens, Ga.
MSU junior Kat Walsh gave State (8-4-2, 0-4-2 SEC) a 1-0 lead that it would take to halftime. The Birmingham, Ala., native netted her eighth goal of the season as she picked up a loose ball, beat a defender to the middle of the field and fired a 20-yard shot into the left corner of the net.
Walsh's goal moved her into a tie with former Bulldogs Jessi Moore, Kristina McCutchen and Meredith Riekert for fourth on the school's single-season goals list.
State senior goalkeeper Taryn Holland and the MSU defense turned back numerous UGA (11-2-1, 4-2-0 SEC) scoring chances until the home-standing Bulldogs netted the deciding goals in the 75th and 82nd minutes.
Holland, the MSU career saves leader, turned back a season-high 10 shots in the contest.
"I am very proud of the way we played today against a very good Georgia team. I thought we battled very well, and at times we countered and possessed the ball well at times," Mississippi State head coach Neil Macdonald said. "They were just a little stronger at the end and created some more opportunities. The result is disappointing, but I am proud of the way we fought today."
Laura Eddy added the game-winner on a UGA corner kick with 8:46 left after having a 73rd-minute shot hit the cross bar. UGA's Alex Hooker knotted the game at 1-1 with a score in the 74th minute.
The Bulldogs return to the road next weekend, traveling to Arkansas on Friday and LSU on Sunday. Sunday's SEC West showdown with LSU will be broadcast live by Comcast Sports Southeast.
