STARKVILLE, Miss. - Six players reached double figures as Mississippi State rolled past Savannah State 97-33 in women's college basketball action Thursday night in the Humphrey Coliseum.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 16-5 overall and closed out its non-conference portion of the schedule with a 13-2 mark. MSU will be 3-3 when it resumes Southeastern Conference play Sunday at Georgia. Savannah State remained winless on the season on the road and fell to 3-17 overall.
MSU was never threatened Thursday night. The Lady Bulldogs scored the game's first 11 points. Then after a made Savannah State basket, the hosts reeled off the game's next 12 points. The Lady Bulldogs shot 52.9 percent from the floor in the opening half and led 45-17 at the intermission.
For the contest, the Lady Bulldogs hit 40 of 70 shots from the field (57.1 percent), 12 of 23 shots from 3-point range (52.2 percent) and 5 of 15 shots from the foul line (33.3 percent). The Lady Tigers hit 13 of 55 shots from the field (23.6 percent), 0 of 9 shots from 3-point range (0 percent) and 7 of 12 shots from the foul line (58.3 percent).
The Lady Bulldogs held a 52-27 rebounding advantage. MSU had a season-high 29 assists and 12 turnovers, while the Savannah had three assists and 21 turnovers.
Robin Porter paced the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points. Tysheka Grimes scored 15 points and Armelie Lumanu scored 14 points. Also in double figurers were Mary Kathryn Govero with 12 points, Alexis Rack with 11 points and Chanel Mokango with 10 points. Grimes had a team-high eight rebounds, while Mokango had four blocks.
Raven Fields paced Savannah State with 15 points, while Lashara Smith added 10 points for the Lady Tigers.
MSU resumes play with a Sunday afternoon road trip to Georgia. The Southeastern Conference battle of the Lady Bulldogs will start at 1:30 p.m. CT Sunday in Athens. MSU returns home for a 7 p.m. start with Vanderbilt next Thursday in Humphrey Coliseum.
