CHARLESTON, S.C. - Improving for the second straight round, Mississippi State's women golfers concluded play in the Cougar Classic, held at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club, on Monday with a team total of 904, good for 13th place overall.
Hannah Weathersby, standing as the only freshman to compete for MSU in the tournament, finished atop State's lady golfers with a 220 total tied for 26th individually, five shots ahead of sophomore Mallory Batson who finished the tournament tied for 42nd overall. "After the first round, the players were determined not to give up anymore ground," MSU head coach Christi Sanders said. "I was pleased to see that we improved as a team each day. The ball strking was good all week, but we need to make some improvements in the short game area to get ready for our next event in a couple of weeks."
After losing some ground in the final round, the Southeastern Conference ranked atop the tournament standings as Georgia retained its lead throughout all three rounds to finish with an 858 and five strokes ahead of second place. Following the Bulldogs was Alabama, who posted a three-round total of 863 to claim second. North Carolina posted a 284 in round three to secure third place overall, Virginia fell to a final position of fourth, while Florida State shot up the rankings in day three to claim fifth. Leading the Seminoles, and all competitors in the tournament, was Caroline Westrup, who completed play with a two-stroke lead at 10 under par.
Mississippi State's women golfers will continue fall action on Monday, Sept. 29, at the Johnnie Imes Invitational. The tournament will be held at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Missouri and will be hosted by the University of Missouri.
