Lady Bulldogs Jump Two Spots In Day Two Of Cougar Classic
September 15, 2008 | Women's Golf
CHARLESTON, S.C. - After finishing one round of play ranked 16th overall, Mississippi State's women golfers now stand at 14th at the Cougar Classic approaching tomorrow's final round at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club.
As the lone freshman to compete for MSU in the tournament, Belvidere, Tenn. native Hannah Weathersby led State's charge up the standings by firing a team-best 72, ranking as the squad's best performance in the tournament thus far. Weathersby stands tied for 21st currently, while standout sophomore Mallory Batson shot 77 for the day to finish the round tied for 39th overall. Fellow sophomore Erika Thornton finished second amongst MSU golfers for the day with a 74 and is currently tied for 65th individually. Junior Gina Sharp tied Batson on the day with a 77, while lone senior Leigh Phillips notched an 83.
"Today the team got off to a slow start but was able to pick it up midway through the round," MSU head coach Christi Sanders said. "They seemed to refocus and fight for every single shot. Individually, Hannah has played very consistent and with great confidence."
The Southeastern Conference continues to dominate this year's Cougar Classic, as four of the top five spots have been claimed by SEC squads after two rounds of play. Georgia dominated round two, recording a score of 279 to pull in the lead for the tournament title by a healthy 13 shots with a total of 567. In second is Virginia, followed closely by Alabama, South Carolina and LSU, respectively. Much like her team, Mallory Hetzel of Georgia holds a commanding lead over the competition individually, owning a three-stroke advantage with a seven under par heading towards tomorrow's final round.
Mississippi State's women golfers will tee off at 7:45 a.m. CT tomorrow for shotgun format action.
