MSU Through Round One At Carpet Capital Classic

ROCKY FACE, Ga. ? The 28th-ranked Mississippi State men's golf team is in 12th place through the first round at the Carpet Capital Classic in Rocky Face, Ga. The Bulldogs began play on the back nine and finished the day with an 11-over-par, 299 at the par-72 Farm Golf Club.
"We played okay at times today," said Coach Clay Homan. "These are probably the fastest greens we will play on this year, resulting in some high scores."
Senior Matt Fast led the way for MState carding an even-par 72 in round one and sits in a tie for 14th place. The Hattiesburg, Miss.-native's first five holes of the day included two birdies and an eagle and he finished off the day with another birdie. Junior Carlos Sainz, Jr. is in a tie for 22nd, finishing with a 1-over-par round 73, which included a team-high five birdies. Carlos and Matt are both 4-under par on par-5s which is tied for first place in the tournament.
Redshirt freshman Lee Heaton, making his collegiate d?but, notched a 4-over-par 76 in round one. Senior Noah Goldman posted a score of 78 as did redshirt junior Brian Mason who finished round one with back-to-back birdies.
"Matt played really well today and got off to a great start," said Homan. "Carlos played steady all day and really helped us out with his play, while Lee was able to hang in there and give us a good outing for his first-ever tournament."
East Tennessee State posted the only team score under par at one-under par 287, placing them in first place after day one. Central Florida stands alone in second with a 1-over-par 288 followed closely by in-state rival Mississippi with a 2-over-par 289. Clemson and Chattanooga are in a tie for fourth with a 3-over-par, 290. SEC-foes South Carolina and Tennessee round out the top six by shooting a 6-over-par, 294.
"We learned a lot about the golf course today," said Homan. "We look forward to coming out tomorrow and playing even better. Mississippi State will resume play tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. EST. Live stats will be available at
