State Fifth After Two Rounds At NCAA East Regional
May 16, 2008 | Men's Golf
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Mississippi State men's golf team remained among the NCAA East Regional's top five teams Friday, as they fired a 282 in the second round at the Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Bulldogs are in fifth place with a 32-hole score of 560 and stand just two shots back of third. The 560 is State's best 36-hole team score this season.
"We had another nice day today," said MSU head coach Clay Homan. "At one point during the day, we were 6-under for the round, but dropped several shots on the last hole. However, we are still in good shape heading into the final round and we just have to keep playing well. I would imagine we have to have another round under par to be safe and our goal is to keep looking forward and finish as high as we can."
Junior Noah Goldman shot a 70 on Friday to move to 4-under par for the tournament. The Longwood, Fla., native is tied for 13th place heading into Saturday's final round. State's first-round leader Josh Bevell is tied for 16th after a 73 on Friday. Bevell has a 139 after carding a 66 on Thursday. Senior Josh Oller fired an even-par 71 in the second round and stands in a tie for 36th with a 141. MSU's best round of the day came from junior Matt Fast who had a 68 as he jumped to a tie for 49th on the leaderboard. Carlos Sainz shot a 73 on Friday and is in a tie for 89th with a 147.
Top-ranked Georgia extended its team lead as they fired a 271 on Friday to take the lead by 19 strokes. Augusta State remained second while Auburn, UC Irvine and MSU rounded out the top five. The day's best round belonged to UAB's Zach Sucher who shot a 62 in his second round. Sucher stands at 11-under par and leads by two strokes in the individual competition.
MSU will begin its final round with a 6:18 a.m. CT tee time on hole #10. State will be looking to finish in the top-10 which would propel the team to the NCAA Championships for the third time in school history. The NCAA Championship will be held May 28-30 at the Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana.
