April 18, 2008 | Track & Field
WALNUT GROVE, Calif. ? Mississippi State freshmen Matthew Cameron and Adam Lenz both broke the MSU freshmen 1500- and 10,000-meter records, respectively at the 50th annual Mt. SAC Relays on Friday, April 18, in Walnut Grove, Calif. The event was held at the Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the campus of the Mt. San Antonio Community College.
In the 1500-meter run, Cameron finished in a personal-best three minutes, 49.26 seconds to take second place, overall, en route to breaking the 31-year old freshman 1500-meter run that was previously held by John Stubbs (3:49.7). Freshmen Ben Blakenship also ran in the 1500-meter run with Cameron, placing fifth with his personal-best time of 3:50.77 to give MSU two of the top five spots in the race.
Adam Lenz ran a personal-best 30:25.91 and posted a top 25-finish in the 10,000-meter run to notch the 10,000-meter freshman record in the event. The 28-year old record was formerly held by Mzee Ruto (30:33.7). With his time, Lenz moves into third all-time in the event in the MSU history book.
Blakenship also competed in the 5000-meter run, picking up a new personal-best time in the race with his time of 14:25.94. Blakenship finished 10th overall.
MState rounded out competition at the Mt. SAC Relays with junior Robert Scribner competing in the grueling 10,000-meter run. Scribner ran in the invitational portion, which was only for select athletes. The Tupelo-native finished the race in a personal-best 29:59.33 to take ninth place. With the time, Scribner, who is already second on the all-time list at MSU in the 10,000-meter run, improves his time.
“Scribner (Robert) ran a great race. It was a very difficult race (the 10,000-meter invitational),” said assistant coach Houston Franks. “They cut the field down and he (Robert Scribner) had to do a lot of the work by himself since Ash (senior Ashenafi Arega) had to pull out of the race because he re-aggravated his hamstring. He ran a really good race. To finish the race in under 30 minutes is a good deal.”
While the distance group will head back to Starkville, the rest of the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs open competition on Saturday, April 19, at the Bulldog Limited at the Spec Towns Track in Athens, Ga. on the campus of the University of Georgia. Action is set to start at 9 a.m.
