March 31, 2008 | Women's Golf
STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. -The Mississippi State women's golf team opened first-round play at the John Kirk/Lady Panther Intercollegiate Monday at the Eagles Landing Country Club, firing a 313 and stands in fourth heading into Tuesday's final round. The Lady Bulldogs are 13 shots off the lead, but are only five strokes out of second.
Sophomore Suzanne Stanley matched her career low round Monday, firing an even-par 73 as she stands in a tie for third place, one shot off the individual leader. Senior Julia Huh is in the top-20 after carding a 78 in Monday's round. Freshmen Mallory Batson and Erika Thornton both shot 81 and are tied for 39th while sophomore Gina Sharp fired an 86 and is tied for 66th.
"I am very pleased by the way Suzanne performed today," said MSU head coach Christi Sanders. "She had great course managemnt and was able to overcome the few mistakes she had with 5 birdies, four of them on the back nine. As a team, we are disappointed knowing we needed a couple more lower rounds that could have put us in contention."
Host Georgia State has the lead after the Panthers shot a 300 on Monday. GSU leads by eight strokes over second-place Jacksonville State and 12 strokes over third-place team Western Carolina. GSU's Sandra Maier and Miami's Jessica Steward are tied for the individual lead after rounds of 72.
Tuesday's final round will begin with a 7:30 a.m. CT tee time on holes #1 and #10. MSU will begin play on hole #1 at 8:10 a.m. CT.
