March 24, 2008 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State first baseman/designated player Courtney Nesbit has been named the Southeastern Conference Softball Freshman of the Week for the week of Mar. 17-23, the league announced Monday.
Nesbit earned the accolade after hitting a team-high .600 (6-for-10) during States mid-week victory over Southern Mississippi and a three-game SEC series sweep of Mississippi. Starting one game at first base and two others at designated player, Nesbit drove in five runs over the four-game stretch.
Courtney had a great week offensively for us, MState head coach Jay Miller said. She had some very good at-bats for us, so its really nice for her to be honored for her efforts. We are looking for big things from Courtney down the road, and hopefully this is just the start of what she will do for us.
The Acworth, Ga., native drove in a season-high three runs on 2-for-3 hitting and recorded her first collegiate double as she drew her inaugural start at first base against USM on Tuesday. She followed that with a 2-for-3 outing in the series-opener against Mississippi.
Nesbit helped MSU (26-9, 4-5 SEC) to a series sweep of the Rebels on Saturday, notching a pair of hits and driving in two more runs. With State trailing 2-1 with two outs in the second inning, she plated the tying run with her RBI single down the line in right field. Nesbit picked up her second hit of the game as she capped a three-run sixth inning with a base hit to center field.
Nesbits honor is the second freshman of the week honor for the Bulldogs as Misty Flesher earned the distinction on Feb. 18. Sophomore Chelsea Bramlett was named SEC Player of the Week following the opening week of the campaign.
The 21st-ranked Bulldogs close out a six-game road trip Wednesday, traveling to Baton Rouge to challenge No. 10 LSU in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
