Batson Leads Lady Bulldogs In First Round Of LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic

BATON ROUGE, La.. -Freshman Mallory Batson shot a 75 and stands in a tie for 15th place as she led MSU in the first round of the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic on Friday. As a team, the Lady Bulldogs sit in 15th after an opening-round 315.
Batson, a Gadsden, Ala., native, is coming off a career-best tie for ninth at the Qdoba Invitational and is looking for her second straight top-10 finish. Julia Huh carded a 78 on the opening day and is tied for 46th after round one. Erika Thornton is tied for 61st after a round of 79 while Jillian Jones and Suzanne Stanley both shot rounds of 83 to close out scoring for MSU.
"We were disappointed in the way we finished today," said MSU head coach Christi Sanders. "We were 14-over through 14 holes and in the middle of the pack and finished going 13-over in the final four holes. We faced some tough wind conditions in those final holes but we still have to find a way to fight through that. We just have to come back out tomorrow and start with a fresh slate."
Florida State shot a 293 as a team to capture the lead after the first round. The Seminoles hold a seven shot lead over host-LSU heading into Saturday's second round. FSU's Whitney Wright and Laura Crawford of Wake Forest are tied for the individual lead at two-under par.
MSU will begin play Saturday with an 8:45 a.m. CT tee time on hole 10. Sunday's final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT with a shotgun start.
