MSU In 10th After First Round At Qdoba Invitational

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. - The Mississippi State women's golf team posted a 317 and stand in 10th place after the first round at the Qdoba Invitational at the Don Shula Golf Club in Miami Lakes, Fla. The Lady Bulldogs stand just 10 shots out of fifth place heading into Monday's second round.
Leading the charge for MSU on Sunday was freshman Mallory Batson. The Gadsden, Ala., native carded a 76 and stands in a tie for 19th. Junior Jillian Jones fired a 78 and sits in a tie for 32nd while freshman Erika Thornton is in a tie for 40th after a round of 80. Julia Huh is tied for 53rd while sophomore Suzanne Stanley is in 65th.
"The first round was very disappointing after having such a good practice round," said Sanders. "Unexpected rains came in during the round and we just didn't handle it as well as most of the other teams. Mallory played much better than her score indicated. Unfortunately she had an 8 on a par 4 when her club slipped in her hands from wet grips. We will be challenged the next two days in trying to make up a lot of ground lost from the leaders."
East Carolina shot a 296 in the first round to grab the team lead heading into Monday. ECU is four strokes up on Louisville and Miami. Miami's Jessica Steward and Grace Thiry of Kansas lead the individual field by two strokes after shooting rounds of 71 on Sunday.
Monday's second round will begin with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. CT. Tuesday's final round will also be a shotgun start beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT.
