STARKVILLE, Miss. ? Two free-throws by Georgia guard Ashley Houts with one second remaining sealed the victory for UGA as the Athens-based Lady Bulldogs took a 60-56 win over Mississippi State on Sunday afternoon at Humphrey Coliseum.
Led by junior guard Marneshia Richard's 15 points, MState dropped to 15-11 overall and 3-8 in Southeastern Conference play. By virtue of today's win, Georgia improved to 19-7 overall and 6-5 in league play.
Highlighted by 10 lead changes and 14 ties, MState tied the game at 56 with a pair of free-throws from senior Imesia Jackson with 1:47 remaining in regulation. The game's final field goal by Angela Puleo with 1:36 on the clock put UGA up 58-56 and Houts' free shots were all Georgia needed to take the win.
Georgia scored the game's opening basket, but neither team could secure a lead. Georgia's largest lead of the half was five with 1:13 remaining, while MSU's was three at the 10:22 mark. After UGA went up by five, Jackson hit back-to-back free-throws with 25 seconds left to trim the UGA lead to three at the break, 29-26.
After hitting four free-throws to begin the second half, MSU managed to score its first basket of the period with a layup from junior Donnisha Tate to tie the game for the ninth time at 32-all with 15:58 left in the game. Georgia took its largest lead of the game at eight points with 10:53 remaining. From there, MState chopped away and eventually regained the advantage at 48-47 on a jumper by junior forward Robin Porter at 5:48. Two more ties in the final three minutes brought the game down to the wire where UGA prevailed, 60-56.
In addition to Richard's 15, sophomore forward Tysheka Grimes hit 7-of-8 free throws and brought down six rebounds and took the ball away a career-high five steals.
Puleo led Georgia with 16 points and forward Tasha Humphrey recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
MState returns to action Thursday evening, traveling to Columbia, S.C., to face the South Carolina Gamecocks in a 6 p.m. CT contest from the Colonial Center.
