STARKVILLE, Miss. ? The Mississippi State women's basketball team put up 97 points to continue their perfect season with a 72-point rout of Nicholls Sunday afternoon. Now 6-0 this season, the Lady Bulldog's margin of victory was the second largest in school history. The Lady Colonels fell to 0-5 on the season with the loss.
The Lady Bulldogs got off to a strong start, scoring 54 points in the first half while only yielding 15 to Nicholls. In the second half, State continued its scoring attack and relentless pressure pushing its lead to as much as 75 late in the second half, holding Nicholls to just 10 points.
The Lady Bulldogs had 12 players in the scoring column as they fell just two points shy of their season high total. Armelie Lumanu led the team in scoring for the second consecutive outing, with 24 points while adding nine rebounds. Lumanu was 8 of 12 from the floor and 7 of 8 from the free throw line as she matched her career high. Junior Tysheka Grimes was the only other Lady Bulldog in double figures, as she scored 12 points on 5 of 10 shooting from the field. Chanel Mokango, Robin Porter, Diamber Johnson and Bethany Washington all added nine points a piece for MSU.
Mississippi State forced Nicholls into 44 turnovers on the afternoon which tied a school record for opponent turnovers in a game. State set a school mark with 32 steals in the game and held the Lady Colonels to 18.8 percent shooting on the afternoon, also a school record.
"I was pleased with how much balance we had," said MSU head coach Sharon Fanning. "I wanted to get a lot of players off the bench to get some experience, and we were able to do that. We were able to run a lot of different things and try some things we needed to."
The Lady Bulldogs will break this week for exams but will return to action next Sunday, Dec. 14, as they host Memphis. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Humphrey Coliseum.
