Freshman Furr Paces Lady Bulldogs On Final Day Of Derby Invitational

AUBURN, Ala. - Freshman Perry Katherine Furr finished 4-over-par in todayʼs final round of the Derby Invitational for her best performance of the tournament to lead the Mississippi State Lady Golfers to a 14th-place overall finish in the tournament.
A pair of sophomores finished atop the individual standings for the Bulldogs. Erika Thornton, completed play a two strokes above her career low of 228 to lead State and rank tied for 32nd overall while Mallory Batson ranked second on the team for the third tournament in a row with a three-round total of 233. Junior Gina Sharp finished third on the team with a score of 236, while junior Leigh Phillips ranked fourth and Furr rounded out State golfers.
The Southeastern Conference placed six teams in the tournamentʼs top eight, although missed the top two positions. First place went to Arizona State, who led throughout the tournament and completed play with an overall score of 869 and five-over-par. Second-place Virginia finished a distant second at 18 strokes behind, while Alabama secured third with a total of 892. Host Auburn finished play ranked fourth while Ole Miss notched a fifth-place finish. Arizona Stateʼs Anna Nordqvist dominated the individual competition, finishing 9-under-par and four strokes ahead of second place.
With the conclusion of the tournament, Mississippi Stateʼs Lady Golfers wrap up the fall season of play. MSUʼs spring season begins on Feb. 22 at the Kiawah Island Womenʼs Intercollegiate, held at Kiawah Island S.C.
