STARKVILLE, Miss. ? Mississippi State took 11 shots, including four on goal, but could not capitalize as Vanderbilt scored three second-half goals to escape the MSU Soccer Field with a 4-0 victory Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs took five shots in the first half, including three in a nine-minute span over the first 45 minutes. The first on-goal opportunity for State (5-14-0, 0-10-0 SEC) came in the 22nd minute as freshman Tarah Henderson slipped past her defender down the right side of the pitch. The Martinez, Ga., native, who is tied for the team lead with four goals on the year, fired a ball toward the net that was unable to angle past VU goalie Rachel Bachtel.

Bachtel stopped four shots in 79-plus minutes of action, while MSU junior goalkeeper Taryn Holland halted three of Vanderbilt's eight on-goal chances. Standing at a career-best 118 saves on the year, Holland, a Franklin, Tenn., native now needs just 13 stops to match Kirstin Olson for the all-time saves lead.

The Commodores (9-7-2, 3-6-1 SEC) broke the scoreless tie at the 28:42 mark as Candace West sent a pass through the defense to Molly Kinsella who scored her first goal of a Sunday afternoon hat trick.

With the MState defense holding Vandy in check the remainder of the half, the Bulldogs had another pair of scoring opportunities turned away late in the opening stanza.

The first came at the 42:41 mark as senior Meredith Jacobson headed a cross toward the goal only to have Bachtel snag it. The other came in the final second of the half as sophomore Danielle Kite struck a ball that appeared to be heading into the top of the net. Bachtel, however, made a leaping save to tip the ball over the crossbar and preserve the 1-0 Vandy lead.

Kite, a Hornchurch, England, native had another chance to even the match just after the half. Senior Bethany Frazier took possession on the left side of the field in the 55th minute and delivered a perfectly placed entry pass to Kite in the box. Kite volleyed what appeared to be the tying goal into the net for her second goal in as many matches, but an offside flag negated the score. Frazier also tallied State's final on-goal opportunity as she lined a shot from just over 20 yards away that Bachtel managed to corral.

“I was disappointed with the 90-minute performance. We put in a good half of soccer in the first 45 minutes,” MSU head coach Neil Macdonald said. “The goal that was called off affected us mentally I thought, and we just couldn't push through.”

The negated goal swung the momentum of the match, and Vanderbilt capitalized, adding two more goals from Molly Kinsella and another from her twin sister Megan.

The Bulldogs close out the 2008 season Friday night, hosting in-state rival Ole Miss on Halloween night in a 7 p.m. kickoff at the MSU Soccer Field. Prior to the match, MState will honor Mary Kate Ayers, Mariclaire Fancher, Frazier, Anna Goblirsch, Jacobson and Kevyn Shelledy as part of senior night festivities.
