Junior Gina Sharp Helps Lady Bulldogs Move Up At Derby Invitational

AUBURN, Ala. - Junior Gina Sharp fired a career-tying, par-72 at the Derby Invitational in Saturday's second round to move Mississippi State up two spots to 11th overall approaching Sunday's final round at the Auburn University Club.
Sophomore Erika Thornton retained the lead for MSU with a total of 152, tied for 20th overall in the individual standings. Fellow sophomore Mallory Batson remained second on the team at 11-over-par and tied for 31st overall, while Sharp's outstanding day brought her to within six strokes of the team lead at 158. Also taking a 158 into the final round will be junior Leigh Phillips, while freshman Perry Katherine Furr rounds out State golfers with a current score of 165.
The Southeastern Conference continues to hold three spots in the tournament's top five. Arizona State continues to hold onto first place with a three-point advantage over second-place Virginia at 584, while Alabama slipped a spot to third with a team total of 596. Host Auburn also fell a spot to fourth and now trails Arizona State by 18 strokes, and Ole Miss complete's the tournament's top five teams after two rounds with a 610.
Mississippi State's squad will complete its fall season of play on Sunday beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT in the tournament's third and final round.
