Lady Bulldogs Complete Round One Of Derby Invitational

AUBURN, Ala. - Concluding the first round of the team's final fall tournament, Mississippi State's Lady Golfers place ahead of two fellow Southeastern Conference foes at 13th heading into Saturday's second round of the Derby Invitational. Sophomore Erika Thornton paced the Lady Bulldogs on the day with a two-over-par at 74, good for a tie for 13th place overall amongst the individual standings.
Just one stroke behind Thornton was the squad's only other sophomore, Mallory Batson, who finished day one tied for 20th overall. Junior Leigh Phillips stands at seven-over-par, while freshman Perry Katherine Furr fired an 84 in her first collegiate tournament appearance. Junior Gina Sharp rounded out State golfers with a total of 86.
The Southeastern Conference placed three teams amongst the tournament's top five after day one, with Alabama falling five strokes behind first-place Virginia, who recorded a team total of 289 in the first round. Tournament host Auburn currently holds on to third and nine strokes out of first, Arizona notched a 300 as a team for fourth, and Ole Miss concluded the top five with a 305. Virginia's Whitney Neuhauser stands atop the individual standings at three-under-par, a single stroke ahead of second place.
Mississippi State's women golfers will begin second-round action beginning at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, while the third and final round will be held on Sunday.
