STARKVILLE, Miss. ? A total of 14 Lady Bulldogs scored as Mississippi State (12-3) routed visiting Mississippi Valley State (6-5), 104-45, Monday night at Humphrey Coliseum. The point total marked the first time since Dec. 4, 2001 the Lady Bulldogs hit the century mark. The 59-point margin of victory ties for fifth-highest in school history.
Mississippi Valley State took an early 6-2 lead in the first half of play, the Lady Bulldogs closed out the first half on a 54-8 run and took a 56-14 advantage into the lockerroom at the break. The maroon and white defensive corps held the Delta Devilettes to 19 percent shooting in the half, compared to MSU's 62 percent. Sophomore Alexis Rack scored 14 first-half points, shooting her way into the Lady Bulldog history books as the newest member of the 500-point club.
MState continued their hot shooting from the first half, shooting 65 percent (37-for-57) from the field on the evening. The Lady Bulldog bench combined to score 55 points in the game. The defense continued to shine in the second half, scoring 48 points off 27 MSVU miscues. MSU dominated in the paint, outscoring the Delta Devilettes, 46-22. MSU battled on the boards, out-rebounding MSVU, 41-30 while scoring 16 second chance points.
Rack led all scorers with 20 points, including going 5-for-7 from behind the arc. Freshman Mary Kathryn Govero tallied 11 points with a 5-for-6 performance from the field while Miayorka Johnson chipped in a season-high 10 points. Senior guard/forward Amy Reeder also added a season-high eight points.
The Lady Bulldogs open Southeastern Conference play from Nashville, Tenn. at Vanderbilt with tipoff from Memorial Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
