Leading the offensive barrage for State was all-America candidate Jamont Gordon, who hit 4-of-8 from long range and a career-high 10-of-17 from the field to lead all scorers with 24 points. Complementing Gordon was sophomore three-point specialist Barry Stewart, who shot 3-of-5 from behind the arc and 6-of-11 overall for 16 points. Senior co-captain Charles Rhodes added nine rebounds and five assists in the winning effort.
The Tide's main offensive threat rested in the hands of junior star Richard Hendrix, who notched his 11th-straight, double-figure performance with 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Junior guard Alonzo Gee added 10 points to cap
MSU took an early lead, and after several lead changes, managed to post a 33-28 lead at the halftime buzzer with a three-pointer from sophomore Ben Hansbrough, playing his first game since injuring his non-shooting hand versus Georgia.
Early in the second half, the Bulldogs manufactured a 9-0 run capped by a resounding dunk by emerging star Jarvis Varnado.
Leading the nation in field-goal percentage defense, the Bulldogs held the Crimson Tide to just 2-of-14 (14.3%) from behind the arc. The 10-point win marked the biggest margin of victory for the Bulldogs while visiting the Tide since an 86-74 victory during the 1989-90 season.
State remains aside the sixth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers as the only two undefeated teams in SEC play as the Bulldogs continue their best league start since the 1993-94 season.
The Bulldogs will return home to the friendly confines of Humphrey Coliseum to host in-state rival and 15th-ranked Ole Miss Rebels (15-1, 2-1) next Saturday, Jan. 26, after a bye grants the team a break in the mid-week. Tipoff for the Bulldog-Rebel clash is set for 4 p.m. CT and the event will be televised regionally by FSN/SUN.
