State's Frayssinoux Falls In Final Of Southern Intercollegiate
September 24, 2007 | Men's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. - Mississippi State senior Philippe Frayssinoux's bid to win the Southern Intercollegiate Division I singles title came up short Monday morning, as he dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Georgia's 58th-ranked Nate Schnugg in the final. The loss was Frayssinoux's first of the season and brings his singles record to 8-1. Frayssinoux's start this fall is the best by a Bulldog since former MSU All-American Romain Ambert started the 2001 fall season 11-1.
After capturing the singles title at the MTSU Blue Raider Invitational last weekend, Frayssinoux followed by making an impressive run this past weekend at the tournament hosted by the University of Georgia. On his way to the final, Frayssinoux won five matches, which included four victories over ranked opponents. His biggest win came in the quarterfinals when he knocked off the tournament's top seed and fourth-ranked Travis Helgeson of host Georgia.
"Philippe really played some excellent tennis this weekend," said MSU head coach Per Nilsson. "He knows now that he can compete with and even beat the best players in the country. Overall, the team had a positive showing at the tournament and we will continue to build on that."
Frayssinoux's next action will come Oct. 4-7 when he travels to Tulsa, Okla., to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's All-American Championships. The tournament annually features the majority of the nation's top players.
