Bulldogs Fall To Memphis, 5-0, In Non-Conference Finale
September 23, 2007 | Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. ? In its final tune-up before conference play, the Mississippi State soccer team (4-4-0) fell, 5-0, to Memphis (6-2-0) at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Memphis immediately took a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes into the game, Emiko Schwab intercepted a Danielle Kite pass, and sent it across the field to Harumi Someya. The senior dribbled towards the net, and slipped it under MSU goalkeeper Taryn Holland into the left corner for the early lead.
Krista Turner almost made it 2-0 ten minutes later. After a race for the ball saw Holland overrun it, Turner shot into a seemingly empty net. But, Bethany Frazier was back to make the kick save. Turner then headed the ball off the rebound, but Holland made the save, keeping it a 1-0 deficit.
Three minutes later, the Tigers did make it 2-0. Halley Jo Sullivan dumped the ball from the left side to Laura Laufenberg, who was in the box. Laufenberg sent the ball into the right corner, increasing UM's lead.
Mississippi State got its first shot with five minutes left in the first half, when Frazier went down the left side, sending a shot that Memphis netminder Isabel Briones made the save on. For the half, Memphis outshot the Bulldogs, 11-1.
The second half, started slowly, as play went back and forth. However, eight minutes in, Memphis struck for its third goal of the day. Someya beat two State defenders to the ball, and then flipped it over Holland into the open goal for her second goal of the game.
The Tigers added two more goals for the final tally.
Mississippi State begins SEC play next week when they travel to LSU and Arkansas. The Bulldogs face LSU on Friday, September 28 at 7 p.m. (CT) before heading to Fayetteville, Ark. for a 1 p.m. (CT) Sunday match with Arkansas.
