BATON ROUGE, La. ? After Mississippi State (4-5-0, 0-1-0) was held without a shot for the entire first half, the Bulldogs picked up the offense in the second half. However, MSU could not hit the back of the net, and fell in its conference-opener, 1-0, to LSU (7-1-2, 1-0-0) at the LSU Soccer Complex.
The game began with neither team getting much offense. But, in the 28th minute, after Mississippi State prevented a shot off of an LSU free kick, the Tigers connected on a corner kick. Taryne Boudreau took the kick from the left corner, sending the ball toward the front of the net. Michelle Makasini headed the ball into the left corner of the net, breaking the tie and giving LSU the 1-0 lead.
The Tigers were inches from making it 2-0. After the teams battled for the ball in front of the net, Amanda Carreno ended up with it to the left of the goal, and sent a shot of the left post, allowing MSU to clear the zone.
Mississippi State got very little offense in the first half, as they were out shot, 4-0. It was the first time all year that the Bulldogs were held without a shot in a half.

In the 50th minute, State had its first scoring chance of the game. Mariclaire Fancher sent a cross towards the net for an open Ashley Hood, but LSU netninder Valerie Vogler grabbed the ball just before Hood could reach it.
The Bulldogs seemed to tie the game ten minutes later when Bethany Frazier took Fancher's pass and sent it into the top of the net. However, Frazier was called for late offsides, and LSU kept its 1-0 advantage.
MSU nearly tied it again with 20 minutes remaining. Frazier beat her defender on the right side, crossing the ball towards the net. However, Jessica Davis' header went just over the crossbar.
Davis again was again inches away from tying the game for the Bulldogs, this time with 11 minutes left. After LSU was called for a foul along the goal line, Frazier's free kick was kicked around in front of the net, ending up next to Davis. The senior tried flipping it into the top of the net, but her kick hit the crossbar, and the Tigers got it out of the zone to preserve their lead.
Mississippi State continues its road trip on Sunday when they travel to Arkansas for a 1 p.m. (CT) match.
