State Finishes 12th at Cougar Classic

Hanahan, S.C. - Behind strong efforts from senior Julia Huh and freshman Mallory Batson, the Mississippi State women's golf squad fired a 298 on Tuesday and finished in 12th place at the Cougar Classic held at the Yeaman's Hall Golf Club in Hanahan, S.C. The total team score of 900 by the Lady Bulldogs was the ninth best 54-hole tournament score in school history.
Huh, a senior from Pasadena, Md., closed out the tournament with a career-best 2-under-par 70, third-round score on Tuesday. For the tournament, Huh finished with a 224, also a career best, and tied for 35th place. Batson, a freshman, fired a third-round 72 which propelled her 19 spots as she finished in a tie for 48th in her first collegiate tournament. Despite shooting a 78 in the final round, sophomore Suzanne Stanley broke four career marks during the three-day event. After firing back-to-back rounds of 73 in the first two rounds, Stanley finished with a 224 and tied for 35th. Freshman Erika Thornton carded a 78 on Tuesday and concluded her first collegiate tournament in a tie for 64th with a three-round total of 231. Sophomore Gina Sharp fired a final round 80 on Tuesday and finished the opening tournament in a tie for 76th.
Notre Dame came from three strokes down on the final day to claim the team title for the second time in five years. The Irish finished with a tournament record 870 and edged out Tennessee by a stroke. Texas and Alabama finished tied for third, five strokes back.
Notre Dame's Lisa Maunu regained her first-round lead to claim the individual title by shooting a 70 on Tuesday. Maunu finished at 6-under-par, edging out teammate So-Hyun Park by three strokes.
The next action for the Lady Bulldogs will come Sept. 29-Oct. 1 when they travel to Lexington, Ky., to compete in the Wildcat Fall Invitational.
