September 10, 2007 | Women's Golf
Hanahan, S.C. - Mississippi State's women's golf team fired a 303 on the second day of the Cougar Classic and stand in 14th heading into Tuesday's final round. After two rounds at the Yeaman's Hall Golf Club, MSU's 36-hole score of 602 is the eighth best in school history.
Leading State on the second consecutive day was sophomore Suzanne Stanley. The Decatur, Ala., native carded a 1-over 73 for the second time in as many days and sits in a tie for 23rd. Both the 18-hole score and 36-hole score for Stanley are career best. Freshmen Erika Thornton and Mallory Batson both fired rounds of 75 on Monday and moved up on the leaderboard. Thornton is tied for 58th while Batson is in a tie for 67th. Junior Julia Huh has a two-day score of 154 and is tied for 64th while sophomore Gina Sharp is tied for 74th with a 156.
"Each player has experienced highs and lows in their rounds the first two days," said MSU head coach Christi Sanders. "Suzanne was solid in round one, fought alignment problems today but was still able to produce a good outcome. Erika and Mallory made good comebacks today after their opening rounds. Erika was hitting the ball really well today and Mallory made a move on the back nine shooting 2-under."
Tennessee shot their second straight round of 288 to take a three shot lead over Notre Dame in the team race. In the individual competition, two Notre Dame players are on top of the leaderboard. So-Hyun Park stands at 5-under par while round-one leader Lisa Maunu is at 4-under.
Tuesday's final round will get under way with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT.
