MSU Soccer Exhibition With Nicholls State Cancelled
August 24, 2007 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, MISS. ? After 30 minutes of play followed by a 30 minute delay, the Mississippi State soccer exhibition with Nicholls State was cancelled due to rain.
The teams played the first 30 minutes under constant lightning before the referees pulled them from the field for a delay. But, a torrential downpour took its place. After 30 minutes of rain, the refs called the game.
Mississippi State took the play to Nicholls State to begin the game, keeping the action in the Colonels end.
Twelve minutes into the game, MSU got on the board. Ashley Hood sent the ball towards the NSU net. A streaking Treena Ferguson beat goalkeeper Molly Mersereau to the ball, sliding into under her body and into the right corner for a 1-0 Bulldogs lead.
Ferguson twice nearly made it 2-0 minutes later, first hitting the post, then shooting the ball into a seemingly open net only to have Nicholls State defender Allison Flynn made the kick save. The Colonels immediately went down the field, sending the ball up the middle. MSU netminder Tayrn Holland came out to stop the ball, but NSU's Alicia Gautreau slipped by her and put the ball into the open net.
Mississippi State will open the season next weekend at the Samford Classic in Birmingham, Ala. The Bulldogs will take on Kennesaw State on Friday, August 31 at 4:30 p.m. before facing Georgia Southern on Sunday, September 2 at 11:30 a.m.
