STARKVILLE, Miss. ? Sophomore forward Tysheka Grimes led the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs (10-3) to a convincing 80?55 victory over the visiting Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana Lafayette (4-8) Sunday afternoon at Humphrey Coliseum.
The first half remained competitive up until the 15:40 mark, when MState stormed out to a 17-3 run in which ULL was held to without a field goal for more than five minutes. The run, capped by an Alexis Rack three-pointer, put the game at 34-18 with 7:04 left before halftime. MSU would then take a 41-20 advantage into the second stanza.
The second half was one of a slow, steady MSU progression as the team extended their lead throughout. MSU's hot first-half three-point shooting (60.0%) cooled in the second half as the team ended shooting 38.1% from behind the arc.
The MSU women out-rebounded their opponent by 10, easily surpassing their average +5.4 margin on the year. After surpassing her season average of 12.8 points in the first half, sophomore forward Tysheka Grimes led all scorers with 19 points along with a tie for team high with eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Bethany Washington surpassed her previous season high with eight rebounds, and Alexis Rack hit a three-pointer for the 28th straight game. Junior guard Marneshia Richard also tallied double figures with 13 points on the afternoon.
State scored 28 points off 24 ULL miscues and got 22 points from its bench.
State's women begin the New Year by traveling to face the UAB Blazers in Bartow Arena on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. CT.
