NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? The Mississippi State women's basketball team got double-figure scoring from three players as the Lady Bulldogs (3-0) snapped the nation's second longest home winning streak with a 66-51 win over Belmont (1-2) Thursday evening in Nashville.
In the first half of action, the Lady Bulldogs traded baskets with the Lady Bruins before putting together a 10-0 run spanning more than five minutes long to go up by 10 at the 10:01 mark. Belmont pieced together a short 6-2 run of their own, chipping away at MState's lead to bring the score to 19-11. Back-to-back three pointers a field goal by Belmont's Shaunda Strayhorn would bring the Lady Bruins as close as four points, but that was as close as they would get in the half. MSU took a 28-22 lead into intermission.
In the second half, Belmont fought back to come within two with 17:04 remaining in the game. State responded with baskets from Mary Kathryn Govero, Donnisha Tate and Tysheka Grimes and jumped back out by 13 with 8:37 left. From there, MState extended its lead out to 22 with under a minute remaining and took the 66-51 win. With the win, MState improves to 3-0 for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
Freshman Govero notched the first double-double of her maroon and white career with 11 points and 12 rebounds, both season highs. Sophomores Grimes and Alexis Rack both tallied 13 points each. Senior Imesia Jackson added 13 boards in the contest.
Head Coach Sharon Fanning and the rest of the Lady Bulldogs return to action on Sunday, Nov. 18, facing Mercer in a 2 p.m. contest from Humphrey Coliseum.
