STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Senior right-hander Jacob Blakeney scattered seven hits over a career-longest eight innings Tuesday afternoon leading No. 17 Mississippi State (35-15-1) to a 13-2 win over Southeastern Louisiana (18-32) in the first half of a day/night doubleheader at Dudy Noble Field. The Bulldogs face Winthrop in the nightcap at 6:30 p.m.
Blakeney shut out the Lions in seven of his eight innings, matching a career-high with six strikeouts. The Lions scored twice and picked up three of their eight hits in the second inning.
State, which matched a school-record by turning five double plays, scored early and often in notching its 35th win of the year. Matthew Maniscalco and Steve Brinson doubled, Steve Gendron delivered a sacrifice fly and Robby Goodson opened a 3-for-3 performance with an RBI single as the Bulldogs claimed a first inning lead off SLU starter Beau Fontenot (0-1).
The Bulldogs sent nine batters to the plate during a six-run second inning. Jeff Butts plated two runs with the first of his two doubles on the night and Robby Goodson drove in two more with his first career triple.
Goodson and Gendron paced MSU's 16-hit attack with 3-for-3 plate performances. Goodson drove in a season-high four runs with a single, a double and a triple while Gendron drove in a season-best three runs with three singles and a sacrifice fly.
SLU tied the score at 2-2 in the second. Justin Mayard singled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on Justin Casas' single to right. Casas raced home moments later on Graham Martin's double into the left field corner. Mayard also delivered a lead-off double in the seventh to lead the Lions at the plate.
Fontenot (0-1) was charged with six runs on six hits. He was followed on the hill by Chad Pendarvis, Brad Pitarro and Joey Duhe.
Blakeney, making his second start of the season and his first appearance since April 26, faced the minimum in six of his eight innings.
