MState Fourth After Day One Of The Memphis Intercollegiate
January 01, 1970 | Men's Golf
State's opening round 5-under par was paced by sophomore Carlos Sainz, Jr.'s even-par 72. In the afternoon round, the Elgin, Ill. native posted a 1-under par round of 71. Sainz, Jr. is currently five shots off the individual leader Kyle Simmons of South Alabama, who posted a 6-under par total on Monday. MSU's Logan Young, a Memphis, Tenn. product, fired an opening round 74 but turned in a 1-under par 71 in the second stanza. Young is tied for 19th heading into Tuesday's finale. Sophomore Matt Fast carded back-to-back rounds of 74 and stands tied for 29th. Noah Goldman rounded out the MState scorecard with a 73 and 76.
Carlos (Sainz, Jr.) is in contention to win the event, said MSU head coach Clay Homan. As a team, we played well in the second round, but we did not finish it off like we needed to. We had too many three-putts and we didn't take advantage of the par 5's.
Louisville is atop the team leaderboard at 13-under par while Wisconsin and TCU posted two-straight rounds of par for second place heading to the final day. USF's Tyler Hitchcock fired the round of the day with a first round 7-under par 65.
Hopefully, we can come out tomorrow like we did in our last tournament and post a low score, said Homan.
The final round will get underway at 8 a.m. CST. After the Bulldogs wrap up play at Colonial Country Club in Memphis they will turn their attention to Friday's Magnolia Cup match with in-state rival Mississippi at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss. The one-round match is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
