January 01, 1970 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Arkansas scored early and never looked back, as the Lady Razorbacks defeated Mississippi State, 3-0, at the MSU Soccer Field. It was Arkansas' fourth consecutive victory over the Bulldogs.
UA came out firing. Two and a half minutes in, Rachel Smith sent a long pass to Christina Burger, who split the MSU defense and sent a shot past Bulldog netminder Taryn Holland for an early 1-0 advantage.
The Lady Backs kept play in MSU territory for most of the game. Arkansas scored again with less than four minutes to play in the half. Allison Harter sent a cross from the right side toward the net that Kat Moffett headed in for a two-goal lead.
State came out of halftime looking to get back in the game. Twenty-four seconds in, Treena Ferguson sent a shot from the right side of the box that beat UA goalkeeper Carrie Dillsaver. But the ball hit the inside of the left post and bounced straight to Dillsaver, keeping it a two-goal game.
Having thwarted of a chance by State, UA looked to put the game away. In the 51st minute, Holland made a diving stop off a Kim Schleif shot, and Lindsay Patterson's rebound went high.
But, the Lady Razorbacks added a third goal at the 77:41 mark. Sophie Wentz deflected a Whitney Allison's pass into the corner of the net, closing the scoring.
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday night when they begin a five-game road trip in a big West Division battle at Alabama. Play begins at 7:00 p.m. You can follow all the action live at www.mstateathletics.com.
