Stan Black
- Induction:
- 2002
- Class:
- 1976
Stan Black starred at Mississippi State from 1973-76, where he earned multiple All-SEC and All-American honors, as well as playing in four bowl games, including the Sun Bowl championship team. He was drafted in the 1977 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers Â
Black played safety for the Bulldogs for most of his career but had a brief stint as a wide receiver in 1974. While playing wide receiver, he led the team with 14 receptions for 266 yards and scored four touchdowns. In his career as a safety, he tied for team lead in 1975, led the team in kick return yardage in back-to-back years in 75-76, and was the third leading tackler on the team in 1976. Â
In arguably his best season with the Bulldogs in 1976, when he earned Playboy Preseason All-American, Preseason Birmingham News All-SEC, and Newspaper Enterprise Association All-American honors, he was also praised by other SEC coaches. Georgia's head coach, Vince Dooley, said Black was the most aggressive safety he had seen since 1966. Â
After Black's time in the NFL, he started his company, Bulldog Construction. He married his wife, Nancy Holt, and they had three daughters. He passed away in 2018 but carried his Hail State spirit throughout his life.
