Robert B. “Tut” Patterson played football at Mississippi State from 1939 to 1942. While at State, he played both offensive and defensive end.
Patterson was the team captain for the 1942 season while earning All-SEC honors from both the coaches and the Associated Press. In 1940, he helped the Bulldogs win the Orange Bowl, and in 1941, he helped State win the SEC Championship.
Following his time at Mississippi State, Patterson was drafted by the New York Giants. He never got to play in the NFL, as he was also drafted to serve in World War II.
Patterson served in Europe as a parachute officer in the 82nd Airborne for 27 months. He completed 16 parachute jumps and earned 5 Battle Stars. He was honorably discharged from the military with the rank of “Major”.
