Mark Jeffrey starred for the Mississippi State tennis squad from 1988-1991.
The Australian native exploded onto the scene his freshman season, as he earned All-American honors in doubles and All-SEC honors in singles. His freshman season wouldn’t be the end for Jeffrey.
In his sophomore season, Jeffrey and his teammate Max Koep earned an SEC Championship in No. 2 Doubles. As a single, Jeffrey was a semifinalist in the National Clay Court Championship. Jeffrey also qualified and reached the second round of the NCAA Individual Championship as a single.
Jeffrey once again earned All-SEC honors in his junior year alongside his double’s teammate Mihnea Nastase. The two would qualify for the NCAA Championship as individuals. Jeffrey once again reached the second round of the NCAA Championship as a single.
Jeffrey concluded his career in the Maroon and White by helping propel his team to the Round of 16 in the 1991 NCAA Team Championship, which was State’s first appearance in program history. He earned his third All-SEC honor as a single and advanced to the second round of the Individual Championship. Jeffrey concluded his career as the 38th-ranked singles star in the country.
Across all four seasons, Jeffrey earned 175 career wins in singles and doubles play, which stands today as the fourth-best mark in program history. 112 of those wins came as a single, a mark that was the most career singles until 2019. Jeffrey became the fourth Bulldog to be inducted into the Mississippi Tennis Association Hall of Fame in 2005.
Following his collegiate career, Jeffrey competed professionally and played in four career grand slams – three Australian Opens and one U.S. Open.
Jeffrey coached 12 seasons for the men’s program at the University of Louisiana spanning from 2009-2021. He compiled a 191-127 record during his time there.
