A well-known Mississippi State athlete in the 1920’s, K.P. Gatchell was awarded 11 varsity letters between 1921 and 1924 for his contributions to the Aggie track, basketball, and football teams. He was voted Best Athlete in 1923 and 1924.
Gatchell was incredibly well-rounded and earned honors in all three of his sports. In 1923, Gatchell was a member of the Southern Conference Championship winning basketball team. He was named to the all-conference team and selected as team captain for the 1924 season. Additionally, Gatchell was named first team All-Southern for football in 1924.
Gatchell is most known for his accomplishments as a track and field athlete. In 1923, he solidified himself as one of the best discus throwers in the country. He was named All-American for his performances that year, which included being named Southern Conference champion. He placed second at the NCAA meet and was invited to participate in the 1924 Olympic Team Trials.
After his time as an athlete ended, Gatchell was named Head Coach of the Aggie track and men’s basketball team. He would continue coaching collegiate level in Mississippi for three years before becoming a successful rancher. Gatchell was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1966.
Gatchell and his wife Alice settled in Columbus. Gatchell passed away in 1972 at the age of 70.
