Hughie Critz played baseball at Mississippi State, then known as Mississippi A&M, from 1917-20 and was captain of the 1920 team. His father, Hugh Critz Sr., was a professor and president of the university.
Critz went on to play professional baseball for the Cincinnati Reds and New York Giants. He hit .322 in his rookie season and finished second in the 1926 NL MVP voting.
He was traded to the New York Giants, where he won a World Series championship in 1933 and concluded his 12-year MLB career.
He was named to the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1962 and holds the team record for most assists in a season with 588. He once shared or held eight National League fielding records. He was also inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1963.
