Harvey Hull played nose guard for Mississippi State for four years, 1973 to 1976. He was known as the anchor for the Bulldogs’ defensive middle.
Hull started all four years of his career with MSU and had at least one tackle in every game his first three seasons. He received All-SEC honors from 1974 to 1976. He was also named a Second-Team UPI All-American and a College Football All-American in 1976. Hull helped lead the Bulldogs to the 10th-best total defense in the country. He was rated as one of the strongest nose guards in the nation by professional scouts as well. He was also selected to play in the 1976 North-South Shrine Game and the 1977 East-West Shrine Classic.
Hull was drafted in the 10th round of the 1977 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. His professional football career ended abruptly when he suffered a catastrophic knee injury in a preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. After a grueling year of rehabilitation from that injury, Hull went back to Mississippi State and earned his degree in physical education. He returned to football at his alma mater as an assistant coach, where he worked with the defensive line.
