Greg Carter captured AP All-America Honorable Mention along with All-SEC First-Team and All-SEC Defensive Team honors during his senior season in 1990-91. He averaged 15.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game as the Bulldogs won a share of 1990-91 SEC regular season title and made the 1991 NCAA Tournament.
Carter became the 18th player to surpass 1,000 points and the 12th player to eclipse 600 rebounds in program history. He shot 53.0 percent from the floor which was fifth among players with 200+ field goals made and collected 115 steals which ranked sixth upon finishing his career.
Following his playing career, Carter was an assistant coach for six seasons with the Bulldogs from 1995-96 to 2000-01 under Richard Williams and Rick Stansbury. Then, he coached at Starkville High School where he won a quartet of state championships in 2010, 2015, 2019 and 2020.
His son, Tyson Carter, amassed 1,352 career points fueled by 216 three-pointers and won the SEC’s Sixth Man of the Year award in 2019-20 at State. The Carter's are the SEC's first father-son tandem to score over 1,000 points apiece.
Carter finished his illustrious MSU career with 1,123 points and 611 rebounds and was named to the school's All-Century team. Carter, now the coach at Starkville High School, also ranks among MSU's career leaders in steals (115) and blocks (53).
Carter started 101 games, including all 59 games of his junior and senior campaigns combined. In addition, he paced the 1990-91 SEC co-champion Bulldogs in rebounding (7.8) and field goal percentage (56.5) en route to garnering first-team All-SEC honors in 1991 and being voted to the All-SEC Defensive team. He was also tabbed honorable-mention All-American.
