George “Bubba” Hampton starred as offensive tackle and guard for the Bulldogs from 1964-66.
A star on the field and in the classroom, Hampton made the SEC Academic All-District Honor Roll all three years he lettered at Mississippi State. Hampton worked hard and hustled at every opportunity. He was named a starter his freshman year and played both sides of the ball.
Hampton served as co-captain of the 1966 team and received numerous accolades following his final season in maroon. The AP Press named Hampton second-team All-SEC for both guard and tackle, and he was an All-American honorable mention. The senior was also selected to play in the annual Blue-Grey All Star game as a starter.
The University also recognized the scholar athlete following the 1966 season. Hampton was named Outstanding Senior Athlete for all sports and received the overall scholastic award for all campus athletes. He was named outstanding senior for the football team as well. Hampton was involved in all aspects of campus life, serving as president of the M-club and speaking regularly at FCA meetings. He was an honors student, presidential scholar and member of various academic honor societies.
Though he was offered multiple professional contracts out of college, Hampton chose not to continue playing football. An honors graduate of the business school, Hampton attended graduate school in Starkville before beginning a career in banking. He spent his entire life as a Bulldog fan, using his influence to motivate positive change for the university and his local community.
Hampton returned to Meridian, married his wife Sandy and had two sons, both of whom graduated from Mississippi State. He passed away in September of 2019 following a long battle with cancer.
