Garry Frank
- Induction:
- 2009
- Class:
- 1987
A vital member of Mississippi State athletics from 1984-87, Garry Frank achieved what few athletes have during his time in the maroon and white. The Omro, Wisconsin, native came onto the scene at Mississippi State in 1984 as one nation’s top shot putters. Stepping into the ring, Frank set and reset the Mississippi State shot record every time he threw. With the school record for the shot (20.66m), the discus (54.33m), two SEC individual championships and the NCAA shot put crown in hand, Frank began setting his sights on the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. However, the track and field star had also played three different positions on the football team. Frank started at center for the 1984 squad before shifting to offensive tackle in 1985. In 1986, he flipped to the defensive side of the ball where he excelled at the nose guard position. Now Frank had an important decision to make, enter the 1988 NFL Draft or pursue his Olympic dreams. Ultimately, Frank went the way of the gridiron and was selected with pick No. 192 in the NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos.
